Veliki Tabor is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments of the profane architecture of continental Croatia. It's exceptional because of its monumental and authentic fortification architecture. Its position at the top of Hum Košnićki, at an altitude of 333 m, has dominated the Zagorje region for more than half a millennium - the architecture blends in with nature, creating a unique image. The view from Veliki Tabor on the whole of Zagorje and part of Slovenia is very impressive.
Opinions are divided about the time of the creation of Veliki Tabor. Some claim that the oldest part of Veliki Tabor was built in the mid-15th century, while others believe that construction of the oldest part began only after 1502. Lately, there is more evidence to support the version of an older age.
In the 18th century, its semicircular towers were remodelled for residential use, loopholes were closed and larger window openings were made. In the courtyard, the semicircular towers were connected by a masonry arcade porch with slender Tuscan columns and semicircular arches of Renaissance features. From the first floor of the porch on the south tower, a masonry bridge separates the entrance to the palace. The fortress was then ready to become a permanent and (relatively) pleasant home of the Croatian nobility.
The castle now houses a museum whose exhibitions will take you on a journey into the past. The most famous legend about the tragic life and death of Veronika Desinićka is an indispensable part of a visit to Veliki Tabor.
